RICHARD1 LAKE was born Abt. 1600 in England, and died Unknown in Gravesend, Kings, NY USA. He married MRS. RICHARD LAKE Unknown. Children of RICHARD LAKE and MRS. LAKE are: 2. i. JOHN (OR JAN)2 LAKE, SR., b. Bef. February 11, 1615/16, Hertford, England; d. August 06, 1696, Gravesend, Kings, NY USA. ii. DANIAL LAKE, b. Bef. 1614; d. Aft. December 29, 1642, Leighton, Buzzard, Bedford, England. Generation No. 2 2. JOHN (OR JAN)2 LAKE, SR. (RICHARD1) was born Bef. February 11, 1615/16 in Hertford, England, and died August 06, 1696 in Gravesend, Kings, NY USA. He married ANNE SPICER February 1648/49, daughter of THOMAS SPICER and ANNE GRANT. Child of JOHN LAKE and ANNE SPICER is: 3. i. JOHN (OR JAN)3 LAKE, JR., b. April 1650, Gravesend, Kings, NY USA; d. May 17, 1729, Gravesend, Kings, NY USA. Generation No. 3 3. JOHN (OR JAN)3 LAKE, JR. (JOHN (OR JAN)2, RICHARD1) was born April 1650 in Gravesend, Kings, NY USA, and died May 17, 1729 in Gravesend, Kings, NY USA. He married NEELTJE CLAESSEN SMIT 1687 in Gravesend, Kings, NY USA, daughter of CLAES CLAESSEN and GEERTRUYD WILLIKENS. Child of JOHN LAKE and NEELTJE SMIT is: 4. i. THOMAS4 LAKE, b. 1700, Gravesend, Kings, NY USA; d. October 19, 1765, Amwell Twp, Hunterdon County, NJ USA. Generation No. 4 4. THOMAS4 LAKE (JOHN (OR JAN)3, JOHN (OR JAN)2, RICHARD1) was born 1700 in Gravesend, Kings, NY USA, and died October 19, 1765 in Amwell Twp, Hunterdon County, NJ USA. He married JANE Abt. 1718 in Amwell Twp, Hunterdon County, NJ USA. Notes for THOMAS LAKE: NOTE: Thomas Lake of Hunterdon, NJ whose will was dated 1755 and proved 1765 has been assumed to be the same Thomas Lake identified as a son of John Lake, Jr. of Gravesend by most LAKE researchers. See "The Lake Family in America" by Devereaux Lake, pub. 1937, pg 73. There is also a possibility that there were two Thomas Lakes who were contemporaries - one the son of John Jr. and Neeltje Claasen and the other a son of Daniel Lake and his first wife. There is also circumstantial evidence, based on Dutch naming patterns that suggest that Thomas and Jane Lake of Hunterdon are the same couple as Thomas Lake and Jannetje Stryker who lived on Staten Island until at least 1718-25. *************************************************************************** NAME: Thomas Lake is named as a son in John Lake Jr's will proved 1723 and received a bequest of £100. MARR: In Thomas' will dated 1755, wp 1765, his wife is named "Jane". If she is the same person as Jannetie Stryker, she was the dau of Garret Stryker and Wyntje Cornelise Boomgard per baptismal records of their son, Thomas at the Port Richmond DRC. (Note: Their children named in "Gen of Lake Fam" as Thomas, Sarah, Elce, Daniel is in error. Sarah, Elce and Daniel were children of Daniel Lake and Sarah Connors of Staten Island per research of Mullane/Johnson). It is also possible that if this Thomas was the one married to Jannetje Stryker, she may have died and he married a second time to "Jane". Although not yet proven, I'm assuming "Jane" to be the same individual as Jannetje Stryker at this time. Still seeking evidence to confirm or refute these assumptions. CHILDREN: Named in will were Thomas, Garrat (Garret), John, Winefreat (Winifred), Sarah, Catherine, Ann, Ellen. All birth dates of children are estimated and may not be in birth order. Some of these children may have been twins, if Jannetje Stryker was their mother, given her age. (Note: some of these names are the same as those of the parents and grandparents of Jannetje Stryker. This is circumstantial evidence supporting the premise that Thomas Lake of Staten Island and Thomas Lake of Hunterdon could be the same individual). ****************************************************************************** HISTORY: Abt 1690 - assumed birth date. Abt 1718 - assumed marriage date. 1718 - only documented birth/bp date (Thomas) of any of his children (assuming him to be the same person as Thomas Lake living in Staten Island in 1718.) 1725 - witness to document on Staten Island. NOTE: 1735 - Per "Early Germans of NJ", by Chambers, pg 634, it is interesting to note that Thomas Lake (or any Lake) does not appear on the 1735 list of the West Jersey Society Lands. Lewis Morris, Jr. was required to make a list of those persons who had leased parts of this tract, which comprised the names of settlers in what was Hunterdon Co. Morris affirms that "there were no other families than these 98 except on the Coxe and Kirkbride tract of 10,000 acres". The Coxe and Kirkbride tract extended from Clinton to Flemington. 1738 - Freeholder of Hunterdon Co., representative to serve in the Genl Assemby of the province of NJ. 1745: reference is made to a tract of land (See "Lake Fam", Devereaux Lake) that was purchased in 1745 by Thomas Lake from Benjamin Whitehead of Jamaica, Queens Co., and from Thomas Stevenson of Somerset, East Jersey. Note: Amwell Township as originally patented contained nearly one half the present county of Hunterdon. Source: Annette F. Truesdale *************************************************************************** Jannetje Stryker NAME: Named in husband, Thomas Lake's will, proved 19 Oct 1765. NYG&BR, vol 36-4, pg 271 names her as wife of Thomas "Leake" in son Thomas' baptismal record. Dau of Garret Stryker and Wyntje Cornelise Boomgard, baptized on 26 Dec 1679, Flatbush DRC. Olive Twp., Morris, NJ USA, and died October 28, 1974 in Somerville, Somerset, NJ USA. She married ALEXANDER GORDON EDWARDS May 24, 1921 in Newark, Essex, NJ USA, son of THOMAS EDWARDS and ISABELLA SMITH. Notes for VIOLA BEATRICE SANDERSON: Viola was a registered nurse, having studied at the Presbyterian Hospital, Newark, New Jersey. She met her husband Alexander 'Wack' Edwards while he was calling on the hospital, which was a client of his. After her splitting up with Wack in 1937, she moved to Long Valley to live with her parents, Nellie and Ira Sanderson. Son Don also lived in Long Valley. Vi spent a lifetime of work as an R.N. After her marriage, she took time to raise her son. After she moved to Long Valley, she resumed working, both for the local general practitioner, Walter Kossmann, and as the school nurse for the Washington Township school district. After retiring from the school job in the late 50's, she continued to work for 'Doc' until she died of a stroke. Her final resting point is a crypt at Fairmount Cemetary, Newark, NJ. Notes for ALEXANDER GORDON EDWARDS: Alexander 'Wack' Edwards was born in Newark, New Jersey. During his professional life, he focused on primarily sales related and promotional jobs. This career path sometimes provided very well, and other times not so well. He and then-future brother-in-law Carl Bolen were calling upon clients associated with Alexander's sister Isabel. Isabel was a nurse, and a co-worker, Viola Sanderson, also a nurse, began relationships with Carl and Wack respectively. Carl married Isabel and Wack married Viola. Wack and Vi had only one son, Donald. Alexander and Vi owned a home at 208 E. 3rd St. in Roselle, NJ. In 1932 they moved to a duplex on Chestnut St. After a few months, they moved to the Sheridan Street Apts. They also lived briefly in the 1st St. apts. It was during this time, late '34 or early '35, the Wack owned a bar in Roselle Park. In 1935 the family, Alex Vi & Don moved to Newark, where they lived at 4th St. & 7th Ave. The apartment building where they lived housed 6 units. During the summer of '37, Wack and Vi left Newark and went to a small apartment in Jersey City. Son Don went to live with Vi's parents in Long Valley. By the fall of '37, Vi had left Wack and also moved to Long Valley. Sometime late in '36 or early '37, Alexander had made a trip to Florida, where he built a house and then raffled it as part of a promotion. That house was located in St. Augustine. When Wack returned to NJ, he and his mother, Belle, lived in a triplex in Newark. They remained there until sometime in 1946 (after Don came home from the service). Wack and Belle then moved to Belleville, NJ. It was sometime in 1949 that Wack moved to Oklahoma City, and Belle went to live with her daughter, Isabel and husband, Carl Bolen. Wack's divorce became final shortly after his move to Oklahoma. Once somewhat settled in Oklahoma, Wack met and married Naomi Parnell. He continued to work in various sales positions until he retired. His final days were spent at the V.A. Hospital. He was buried in Memorial Park Cemetary, Oklahoma City. He left this private school in 1932 when the family vacated the house at 3rd St. in Roselle. Don then attended 4th through 6th grades at the Harrison Avenue (Roselle) School while the family lived at Chestnut St. then Sheridan Apts. In 1935 when the family moved to Newark, Don attended the Garfield School, completing the 8th grade there. In the summer of 1937, when his parents split, Don went to Long Valley to live with his mother's parents, Ira and Nellie Sanderson. He entered Hackettstown High School in the fall of 1937. After he graduated high school in 1942, Don entered the service on 4 February, 1943, where he served in WWII, spending time in England with the then Army-Air Force. ******************************************************************** Service location information: Ft. He also spent some time at the Lincoln-Mercury assembly plant. About 1950, Don began a career with Johnson & Johnson which would span 35 years until his retirement. It was at this time that Don met and courted Jean Marshall, whose family had moved from Maplewood to Long Valley, settling in the Middle Valley area on Turtleback Road. After their marriage in 1948, Don and Jean honeymooned in Miami Beach, returning to NJ on Christmas Eve, just in time for the holiday. They lived in a couple of different homes around the area and then in 1956, they built a house on some of the property owned by Jean's parents. Life was quite relaxed in the rural community. Don as well as Jean, participated in activities at the Lower Valley Presbyterian Church. They both served as scout leaders while their children were involved in scouting. Don served on the local election board and also on the municipality's shade-tree commission. After about 30 years in their home outside of Long Valley, they retired to Merritt Island, FL. They bought a home on the waterfront, so Don finally got the boat he always wanted. Also, the move allowed Don and Jean to be near their two children, Gordon who had moved to Merritt Island in 1981, and Ann who had moved to Rockledge in 1986. Today, 1998, Don lives in the waterfront home. He had suffered a stroke in July 1997, which has slowed him down quite a bit. His wife of almost 50 years passed in February 1998. Daughter Ann has moved in with him to assist in his daily activities. Son Gordon manages the business affairs. Inspite of some of these challenges, Don remains upbeat and enjoys having family nearby. His parents moved to a house built on a portion of his maternal grandparents' farm, which was about 4 miles to the south in an area known as Middle Valley. It was in this house that Gordon spent his school years. The area was rural, therefore not many neighbors were near. He did the usual childhood things such as Cub & Boy Scouts, his parents both participated as scout leaders, as well as some school activities. He enjoyed the outdoors, often building forts & campsites. He enjoyed working on and restoring cars in his late teens and early twenties. He attended Washington Twp. Elementary School, then upon graduating from West Morris Central H.S., he went on to Rutgers University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration. He tended to be somewhat of a bookworm, and did quite well in school. Gordon was quite active in the church during this time. After a year or so of 'floating', Gordon began a second 'career', still in the planning business, but this time with the aerospace industry. That career has continued to present. Gordon remarried in 1989 and lives in Merritt Island, his present wife, Bev, lives in nearby Cocoa. Gordon spends a lot of his time at the Cocoa house. They have been able to withstand some differences and remain quite close. In 1998 Gordon and Bev purchased some property near Jonesborough, Tennessee, near Bev's brother, Randy. They are in the process of building a retirement home on that site, overlooking the Appalachian Mtns. Gordon hopes to retire at about age 55 and travel throughout the country, keeping both the Merritt Island home and the Tennessee home. Gordon enjoys photography and genealogy in his spare time.
