Maryland Independent Newspaper, Waldorf, Md., Wednesday, Apirl 4, 2007 Winfred Edward Lakes, 82, La Plata Winfred Edward Lakes, 82, of La Plata died March 30, 2007, at Windsor Point Retirement, Fuquay-Varina, N. C. Born Nov. 12, 1924, in Boone County, W. Va., he was the son of the late Allen Lakes and the late Pearl Hobbs Lakes. He graudated from the West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1947 with a bachelor of scienc degree. He received a master of science degree from West Virginia University in 1950. He taught mathematics and coached sports in West Virginia high schools from 1945 through 1958. In 1958 he moved to Maryland with his family and pursued a long and honored career as a teacher and coach, high school vice principal, and as supervisor of physicial education and health in the Charels county school system. He was inducted into the Maryalnd State Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame in 1984. He enjoyed trout fishing, hunting, and playing golf. After his retirement he was active in the Charles County Retired School Personnel Association. He was a longtime resident of La Plata. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances Lakes; sons, Dan Lakes and his wife, Shelley Lakes, of Apex, N. C. and Randy Lakes of La Plata; daughters, Lind Lakes and her husband, John Watts, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Rhonda Meleen and her husband, William Meleen of Faulkner and grandchildren, Leanne Lakes, Carly Lakes, Corinne Watts and Tennison Watts. Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. April 4 at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata. A service will be held at 11 a.m. April 5 at La Plata United Methodist Church, La Plata. Burial will take place at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf. Pallbearers will be Dale Cornette, Ron Stover, Santy DiSabatino, Don Cooke, Harold Hayes and Brian Stevens. Memorial contributison may be made to the Charels County Retired School Personnel Association (CCRSPA) Scholarship Fund, in care of Mr. Jordan Burick, 9296 Windsor Drive, La Plata, MD 20646.
