WALTER "DOUG" LEEK Otisville, N.Y. Walter "Doug" Leek, a longtime resident of Otisville, died Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at the Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, NJ. He was 84. Doug was one of five children, born to Alfred William Leek and Mary O'Connor Leek. He was born on September 7, 1919 in Flushing. Doug married Mary Elizabeth Browne on June 20, 1942 in Flushing. He proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Marines Corps during World War II. He was rifle marksmanship instructor and had participated in action against the enemy in Kwajalein Atoll, Saipan, Tinian and in Iwo Jima. Doug was wounded in action on June 30, 1944 and received a purple heart, Bronze Star of Honor and four presidential citations for the injuries he had sustained. A proud Marine, Doug was a member of the Greenville V.F.W. Post #3175, the American Legion Floyd Charter Post #1079, the D.A.V. Chapter 22 and a lifetime member of the New York 4th Marine Division Association. After his time served with the Marine Corps, he returned home to his wife, Mary and was employed as a driver for Swift Meat Company in Long Island. Upon his retirement Doug and Mary moved to Otisville in 1977. Along with his wife Mary of 61 years, Doug is survived by his two daughters, Kathleen Romeo of New York City, and Eileen Ralley and her husband Neil of Verona, N.J.; his son, Douglas Leek and his wife, Harriet of Deer Park, Long Island; three grandchildren, Stephen, Michael and Kyle; two great-grandchildren, Caroline, "Little" Michael and one on the way; one brother, Charles Leek of Florida and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers and one sister. Family and friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, September 14 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown. The American Legion Floyd Charter Post #1079 will conduct a Service of Remembrance at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 15 at 11 a.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 45 Highland Ave., Otisville. Burial will full military honors will take place on September 30 in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Memorial donations in Doug's name may be made to Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, PO Box 1947, Quantico, VA 22134. Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home Inc.
