Verna Mae Lakey-Nitzel of Longmont died March 2, 2006, at Peaks Care
Center.  She was 85.  She was born June 25, 1921, to Arthur and Pearl
(Lobough) Lakey in Logan, Neb.  On July 30, 1938, she married Johnnie
W. Nitzel in Washington, Kan.  She was a homemaker, wife and cook. One
of her last cooking jobs was at the Williams Wayside Inn in Berthoud.
She moved to Berthoud in 1960 and to Longmont in 2000.  Mrs. Nitzel grew
up in the Presbyterian Church.  She enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening,
crocheting and playing piano.  Mrs. Nitzel was preceded in death by her
husband; a son, Richard Lee Nitzel; four brothers, Ray, Lyle, Hap and
Ivan; a sister, Gladys; and a great-grandchild.  She is survived by two
sons, Robert Lee Nitzel and his wife Luella and Michael Eugene Nitzel
and his wife Judy; two daughters, Alice Jean Churchwell and her husband
Ron and Lucille Ann Caspers and her husband Bob; 10 grandchildren; 16
great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law,
Isabelle Lemmon; and a brother-in-law, Dale Nitzel and his wife Doris.
Private services and interment have been held.
