Published in the Mail Tribune on 11/6/2007. Medford, OR Stanley Laker, age 83, of Grants Pass, died Sunday, November 4, 2007, at his home. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201. He was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Danville, ILL., to Walter and Ruby Laker. He grew up on a farm and was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He played basketball and baseball, and once caught for "Dizzy" Dean during the pitcher's barnstorming days. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces. From 1944 to 1945, he served in the Philippines as a crew chief, aviation mechanic. He was honorably discharged. Thirty-six years ago, he moved to Rogue River from Riverside, Calif. For nine years, he was married to Laura Jean McCord. They had a son. On Aug. 1, 1957, he married Norma E. Girard, who died in May 2001. He worked most of his life as a journey electrician, including contracting electrical work on convalescent hospitals in California. In 1970. he completed a course in extended care facility administration. He was a member of Power Squadron in California, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and several Masonic organizations in California and Oregon. In later years, he attained 33rd Degree Status in Scottish Rite Branch of Free Masonry. He enjoyed building, remodeling, watching sports, especially baseball, and yard sales. He especially enjoyed his family. Survivors include two sons, Michael Laker of Grants Pass, and Jerry Girard of Medford; a daughter, Carol McCarthy of Medford; two brothers, Curt Laker of Vancouver, Wash., and Phil Laker of Arizona; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
