Morning Sun; Mt Pleasant MI; 2001-7-8 Muriel E. Lakey Nov.20, 1908 - July 5, 2001 Muriel E. Lakey, 75, Traverse City, formerly of Mt. Pleasant and Muskegon, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City with the Rev. Dr. Homer Nye and the Rev. Becky Chamberlain officiating. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City, on Monday, from 6 to 8 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be considered to the Presbyterian Church Building Fund. Muriel was born November 20, 1925 in Muskegon, the daughter of Pete and Grace (Hitchcock) Kooistra. On August 2, 1947, she married William E. Lakey, who survives. she graduated from Muskegon High School in 1944; graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948 with a degree in education; and subsequently received a masters degree in librarianship from Central Michigan University in 1970. She worked for brief periods in her fields of study, but her heart was always in the home; cooking, decorating and landscaping. Muriel raised three children and enjoyed doing things outdoors. She has a special interest in hiking in Isle Royale National Park, where she celebrated her 59th wedding anniversary with her husband, children, and grandchildren. A great time for her would be to simply sit on the patio and watch the sunset over Grand Traverse Bay. Muriel was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Voyagers and the Grand Traverse Association of Retired School Personnel. Along with her husband, William "Bill) of Traverse City, she is also survived by her daughter, Barbara McTaggart of Houghton; sons, Bill Jr. of Bethlehem, N.H. and Bob of Kalamazoo; granddaughters, Heather, Sarah and Laurel; and a grandson, Alan.
