Grand Island Independent; Grand Island NE; 2003-11-13 BURWELL, NE -- Maynard Pratt Lakin, 89, of Burwell died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Valley County Nursing Home in Ord. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. Burial will be in the Cottonwood Cemetery at Burwell. The Rev. Don Studley will officiate. Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements. Maynard was born Oct. 14, 1914, at Burwell to Seth and Lula (Denman) Lakin. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Louise Lakin, and two sons and daughters-in-law, LeRoy and Dawn Lakin of Brea, Calif., and Bill and Norma Lakin of Frederick, Md. Don Studley officiated. Visitation was from 5 - 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell, Nebraska. Memorials are suggested to the Burwell Ambulance Supply Fund. Maynard was born October 14, 1914 at Burwell, Nebraska to Seth and Lula (Denman) Lakin. He grew up in the Rose Hill area north of Burwell and farmed the family farm. Maynard married Louise Hilpert on January 16, 1937 in Ord, Nebraska. They farmed north of Burwell, Nebraska until 1948 when they moved into town. While living in Burwell Maynard was a carpenter. In 1950 they then moved back on a farm until 1968 when they moved to North Carolina where Maynard did carpentry work. Then in 1971 they moved back to the Burwell area and continued carpentry until he retired. Maynard was active in the United Methodist Church and was also the oldest member. He was a past board member of Rose Hill School, Co-op, and ASCS. Maynard was also a 4-H leader. Maynard is survived by his wife, Louise Lakin of Burwell, Nebraska. Two sons and daughters-in-law: Bill and Norma Lakin of Frederick, Maryland and LeRoy and Dawn Lakin of Brea, California. Five grandchildren: Glen and his wife, Jennifer Lakin, Kendra and her husband, Adam Nemitz, Billie Lakin, Judy and her husband, Richard Malck and B.J. Lakin. Maynard was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Glenn Lakin and two sisters, Mildred Wilson and Rozetta Gaukel.
