The Press of Atlantic City Atlantic City, NJ Monday, October 22, 2001 LEEK, MARY SCHMERTZ, 85, of Longport, died suddenly at the home of her daughter in Turnersville on Saturday, October 20, 2001, after a lengthy illness. She was born and raised on Rhode Island Ave. across from the Absecon Lighthouse. She was a lifelong resident of Absecon Island having lived in all four communities. Prior to her illness she resided in Longport. Mary was a graduate of Atlantic City High School class of 1933 and she received her BA degree in science from Beaver College in 1937. Between 1945 and 1965 she completed graduate work at Rutgers University, Temple University and Glassboro State College. She received her Masters level degree in elementary education. After ten years as a homemaker, Mary taught pre-first grade at the Steelmanville School in Egg Harbor Twp. between 1949 and 1952. In 1953, she moved to the Margate City School System and taught in the primary grades until retiring in 1978. Mary was a member of the Ventnor Trinity United Methodist Church where she was active in the WSCS. She attended the Ranch Hope Auxiliary meetings and belonged to the American Association of University Woman and the Women's Research Club of Atlantic City. She is predeceased by her husband Matthew M. Leek. She is survived by her daughters: Marcie L. Leek of Turnersville and Bonnie E. Leek of Longport and Linwood. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, grand and great great nieces and nephews.
