Times-Union; Warsaw IN; 2007-8-28 NAPPANEE - Larry LaMarr Lakins, 68, of Surf City, N.C. and formerly of Nappanee, died at 6:40 p.m. Aug. 26, 2007, at Goshen General Hospital following a sudden illness. He was born June 28, 1939, in Bremen, to Robert and Lucille Guard Parcell, both survive in Syracuse. On Sept. 2, 1961, he married Ann M. Anderson, who died Dec. 4, 1997. He was the former owner of the Old Buffalo Inn Bed and Breakfast, Nappanee. He was a 1957 graduate of Nappanee High School. He was a member of the 1957 Elkhart sectional championship basketball team. He graduated from North Carolina State, where he was captain of the basketball team in 1965. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea and later in the Berlin Crisis. He was a member of Nappanee United Methodist Church and attended the Faith Harbor United Methodist Church, Surf City. Also surviving are a son, LaMarr Lakins II, Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters: Mrs. Bill (Jane) Musser and Vicky Blosser, both of Syracuse; Mrs. Levi (Jan) Barnhart, South Bend; a brother, Jim Parcell, Columbus, Ind.; a fiance, Susan VanNote, Wilmington, N.C.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister. Services will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 4 at Edenton Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathon Jeffries officiating. Star-News; Wilmington NC; 2007-9-1 Larry LaMarr Lakins Larry LaMarr Lakins, age 68, of 3024 Third St., Surf City, NC, died following a sudden illness of 6:40 p.m. Sunday in the Emergency Room at Goshen General Hospital in Goshen, IN. He was in Nappanee, IN, celebrating his 50-year class reunion Saturday night. He was born June 28, 1939, in Bremen, IN to Robert and Lucille (Guard) Parcell. On September 2, 1961, in Watha, NC he married Ann M Anderson. She preceded him in death December 4, 1997. He lived most of his life in the Nappanee area, Mr. Lakins was a veteran and served in the Army in Korea. He was later recalled during the Berlin Crisis. He was semi-retired, working for Intracoastal Realty Corp., in Surf City. Larry graduated from Nappanee High School in 1957, where he was an outstanding basketball player. The Bulldogs won the Elkhart Sectional in 1955. He was the leading county scorer in 1956 and second in 1957. He was a member of the Elkhart County Sports Hall of Fame. Larry was recruited to North Carolina by Former Hoosier Everett Case. During his senior year Coach Case became ill and Press Maravich (Pistol Pete's father) took over as North Carolina State's coach. During the 1965 season Larry was captain and leader of the team. Late in the season, he lead the country in field goal percentage. The team went on to beat Duke to win the Atlantic coast championship and earn a spot in the NCAA tournament. Larry was also recognized as an outstanding defensive player at North Carolina State. Pete Maravich was later quoted as saying his father, Coach Press Maravich, said, "The '65 N.C. State team was his favorite team he had ever coached." Mr. Lakins was a member of the United Methodist Church and attended Faith Harbor United Methodist Church in Surf City. Survivors include a son, Larry LaMarr (Sharon) Lakins II, Raleigh, NC, two grandchildren, Ann Francis (sic) Lakins and Larry LaMarr Lakins III, his parents, Robert and Lucille Parcell, Syracuse, IN; 3 sisters, Jane (Bill) Musser and Vicky Blosser, both of Syracuse, IN, and Jan (Levi) Barnhart, South Bend, IN; a brother Jim (Gena) Parcell, Columbus, IN; his fiance, Susan VanNote, Wilmington, NC; 2 sisters-in-law, Doris (Johnnie) Cottle, Watha, NC, and Susie (R.J.) Akins, Burlington, NC; and 2 special nieces, Virginia Rogan, Richmond, VA, and Julie Hieronymus, Wilmington, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife Ann and a sister, Peggy Baumgartner. A Memorial service will take place at 11 a.m., September 4, 2007, at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh. The Rev. Jonathon Jeffries will officiate. His remains will be buried next to his wife's in Watha United Methodist Church Cemetery.
