Redding Record Searchlight; Redding CA; 2006-1-20 Howard Lakey ANDERSON -- Howard A. Lakey, 79, of Anderson died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at his residence. No services will be held. Born July 5, 1926, in Burney, he was a lifelong Shasta County resident. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and received a Purple Heart for injuries received in the sinking of the USS Princeton during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He was a truck driver, retiring as a wood-chip truck driver with Hockey Transportation, and was a life member of Anderson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9650 and a member of Cottonwood American Legion Post 746. Survivors include wife Gayle; sons Howard Jr. of Hat Creek, and James and Duane, both of Redding; daughters Agnes Ponder of Spokane, Wash., Julie Humphrey of Citrus Heights and Leslie Quilter of West Jordan, Utah; stepson Lyn Hall of Salt Lake City; brothers Andrew of Glenburn and J.K. of Camarillo; sisters Bessie Townsend of Redding, Marce Thornhill of Chico and Dorcus Atkinson of Lewiston, Idaho; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Anderson's Chapel in Anderson.
