Charlotte Observer (online edition) Charlotte, NC December 20, 2005 Garland E. Lakey Mr. Lakey, age 77, of Charlotte, died December 19, 2005. Funeral services will be at 12:30 PM Wednesday at McEwen Charlotte Chapel, with Reverend Jim Weekley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Lakey was born in Charlotte on March 3, 1928, son of the late Henry Gray and Lilla Rhodes Lakey. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where he had served on the administrative council, the day care board, was a member of the Men's Fellowship, and was head usher and greeter. Mr. Lakey served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of Paw Creek American Legion Post #353. He retired as a mechanic from Johnson Motor Lines and later from Pepsi Cola Bottling Company. Prior to his illness, he enjoyed fishing, golf and cooking for his family and friends. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Dot Lakey; son, Richard Lakey of Charlotte; daughter, Shelley Youngblood and husband, Tony, of Charlotte; grandchild, Taylor Youngblood; sister, Lena Self of Charlotte; brothers, Leroy Lakey and wife, Mary Frances, of Charlotte, Doyle Lakey and wife, Rachel, of Charlotte, and Arnold Lakey and wife, Becky, of N. Wilkesboro, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Lakey, and sisters, Juanita Mabry and Dorothy Hedspeth.
