Vancouver Sun; Vancouver BC Canada; 2008-8-22 Edwin T (Jim) Laker 28th May 1936-15 Aug 2008 After lengthy illness, bravely borne, Edwin known as Jim. passed away quietly at Lions Gate Hospital on Aug 15, 2008. Jim is survived by June, his wife of 47 years and loving family, Susan (Harry), Jonathan (HeeJeung) and Colin (Mamick); grandchildren Bob and Joe Czepil, Emma and Sara Laker. He also leaves his sister, Nell and brother-in-law Barry cook; his sister-in-law Maureen O'Sullivan, his brother-in-law Denis O'Sullivan (Marie-Josee) in Ireland and nieces and nephews in England and Canada. Jim attended King's School, Canterbury, England and emigrated to BC on a private scholarship UBC in 1955, graduating with a BS in civil Engineering 1959 and later obtaining his P. Eng. He joined the UNTD while at University fulfilling a family connection to the sea and also joined the Player's club traveling throughout BC. Upon graduation, Jim worked for H.A. Simons Int. and later as VP. Corporate Affairs for Simons/Klohn Krippen over a period of 39 years, traveling extensively in Canada and North and South America. Although he started out in the pulp paper industry he later developed a career in mining engineering in BC and various parts of the world. He was involved in the oil sands development Fort McMurray in Alberta, working out of Calgary and later, in addition to mining ventures in south America, in the construction of a new runway at Vancouver Airport in 1990. Jim raised his family in West Vancouver where he was a resident fort over 40 years. His interests were many, including building, sailing, traveling, gardening and anything mechanical. He was a patient teacher and mentor and an early supporter of women pursuing professional careers. He was a loving and loved husband, father and grandfather and will be sorely missed by all his family and friends. Cremation will take place in a private ceremony. A celebration of life is planned at West Vancouver Yacht Club on Sat. 30 Aug at 3.3.0 pm so that family , friends and former colleagues may gather to remember him.
