Knoxville News-Sentinel 11/10/2002 Knoxville, TN LAKIN, DEADERICK - was born November 4, 1912. He died how he lived, with dignity on November 8, 2002. He grew up on a farm in Gibbs where he helped his family with their small dairy. He graduated from Gibbs High School and the University of Tennessee and began a long career in teaching in 1933 at a one room school at Thompson School Road. He later taught at Fort Sumter and Alice Bell School. In 1944 he became the Principal at Halls Elementary School and retired 33 years later leaving a legacy in the community that will be remembered as one of compassion and caring for his students. He was tireless in his efforts to provide a safe place for his students to learn. He would arrive at school before the first bus and would leave only after the last bus left in the afternoon. If you missed your bus or were sick, Mr. Lakin would take you home. He faithfully attended Central Baptist Church of Fountain City. He was also a member of the Corryton Masonic Lodge. He married Evelyn Corum in 1936 and they had two children. He grew up in a family of four boys and two girls. This extended family included 6 nephews and 7 nieces who were like his own children. Besides his immediate family he was also interested in his more extended family and did considerable work in researching his family tree. Deaderick Lakin was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Corum Lakin; his father, John H. Lakin; mother, Vandalee Parker Lakin; three brothers, Estell, Claude and Hubert; and two sisters, Bessie Brock and Eula Henderlight. His daughters, Evelyn Eloise Lahti and Virginia Hahn; sons in law, Raymond Lahti and Vinton Hahn and granddaughters, Kristen Howerton and Lauren Hahn, survive him. Surviving nephews and nieces are Clarence Lakin, Wanda James, Jean Simmons, Polly Lakin, Betty Lakin, Nelson Lakin, Weldon Brock, Patricia Watson, Vanda Thayer, Frank Henderlight and Carlene Reagan. The family also expresses a special thanks to all his many friends for their love and support. Funeral service 8 p.m. Tuesday November 12 at Mynatt's Chapel. Family will meet at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, Alcoa Hwy. 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 13, 2002 for interment and graveside services; Rev. Ron Mouser officiating.
