April 20, 1881 Lambertville Record (NJ) "Mr. Cornelius Lake, of this city, received a telegram from Kansas on Monday stating that his brother William and been shot that day. No particulars were given. He had been living from some time near Belle Plain, Kansas. He was well known to persons in this section, having lived for some time in this city." The May 18, 1881 issue reported that "Mr. G.W.Lake of Frenchtown started for Mulvane Kansas on Monday of last week, to look after his late brother's affairs." Here is more on the story, 6-16-1881 " Mr. G.W. Lake returned from his trip to Kansas this week, where he had gone to look after his brother's affairs, and has been sick since his return. The trial of Oron Troup for the murder of William Lake came off in May, but the jury disagreed, and he will be tried again in September. Mr. Lake reports the Jerseymen in the vicinity of Mulvane and Belle Plain, as doing well"
