From the Bloomsburg Press Enterprise (Pa.) Two hunters fatally stricken By LEON BOGDAN Press Enterprise Writer IOLA -- A former zoning officer from Nescopeck died Monday of an apparent heart attack while hunting with a relative in Greenwood Township on the first day of deer season. A group of local hunters found Fred Frey Jr., 43, of 711 Second St., Nescopeck, lying face down beside a small stream with his rifle at his side. Frey had complained to his stepbrother, Mick Hunsinger, of tightness in his chest and shortness of breath a few hours earlier but decided to head back into the woods about 7:30 a.m. "He asked me to carry his gear out to his truck. That he could hardly breathe," said Hunsinger, 48, a highway construction worker who also lives in Nescopeck. Eric Henger, 40, owns the posted hunting grounds about a mile above Sereno Hollow. He heard "a bunch of commotion" coming from the road when Frey was discovered by the group of local men around 11 a.m. "They were yelling to see if there were any other hunters around. I was on top of the hill and came down to see what was going on. I left a buck and a doe back there," Henger said. Greenwood Township Police Chief Edwin Houseknecht said the hunter's legs were first spotted by Dan Morris and "a group of other Greenwood boys" as they stopped to begin a hunting drive in that part of the woods. Hunsinger, a tall and stocky man, said his stepbrother was a "bull" of a man who did smoke cigarettes "but only lights" and was employed as a security guard at the PPL nuclear power plant in Salem Township. Columbia County Deputy Coroner Linda Kessler said Frey had a family history of cardiac problems and diabetes. Kessler said she would wait to speak with his family before deciding whether to order an autopsy. Frey had served as a part-time zoning officer in Nescopeck for several years until he resigned last April, according to the borough secretary. He was involved in the highly publicized legal case swirling around nude dancing at Sammy's Hide-A-Way Lounge until the courts shut the club down a few years ago.
